Day Two

Bakersfield to Kingman

We headed out from Bakersfield with a full tank of gas. We'll take Hwy 58 to cross over the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada mountains and down into Mojave. The road tops out at the Tehachapi Pass, which is at 3771 feet. Compared to other mountain passes that cross the Sierras, this one is considered pretty tame. As a result, a tremendous number of trains make this trek every day, pulling often 75-100 rail cars. The pass can get windy, which often happens mid-day. So, we got on the road early and made sure we were up and over by noon. We still hit some fog and drizzle on our way.

And the occasional dust-devil

Allan and Patricia happened upon this one Chevron station that was selling gas for $9.99 per gallon. Luckily they were able to travel further and pay a more reasonable price.

As we dropped down in the city of Mojave, we saw off in the distance the Jet Airplane Boneyard, where over a hundred planes are stored and stripped for parts. Here is an article about this operation.

Tomorrow we head east past the Grand Canyon and then head north into Utah.

As well as watched several trains chugging along in the distance.

Our overnight campground in Kingman was OK but nothing great.

... and the occasional Dust Devil.
