Day 89
Golden, Colorado to Thompson Springs, Utah
It was nice to step out of the trailer to the crisp cold air on a fall morning In Golden Colorado. We've had an abundance of heat and humidity on this trip as we traveled through the midwest and the east coast in late summer (as we expected.) So the coolness is a welcome change. We got on the road on I-70 West and began climbing in elevation as we approached the summit and the Continental Divide. Our itinerary calls for us to stay on I-70 all day as it takes us through Colorado and on into Utah. But, we use this RV Planning software (RV Wizard) and it called for us to actually exit I-70 and take Highway 6 as an alternate route. This alternate route has us going over Loveland Pass instead of Eisenhower Pass. Why would it do this? This RV software is supposed to help RVers take the best route, so maybe Loveland Pass isn't as steep as Eisenhower Pass? Well, I can assure you that Loveland Pass is plenty steep. It has a speed limit of 30 MPH!! When you're pulling a good-sized trailer, you worry about braking on steep descends and cooking your brakes. Our brakes got plenty hot and the driving was white-knuckled as we proceeded with this "recommended" route. But we also got to see some pretty snow-capped mountain scenery as Hwy 6 took us past several ski resorts before it eventually had us rejoin I-70 heading west.

I was relieved when we finally got down out of the elevation. We cruised on through the rest of Colorado and on into Utah. The scenery changed from the high-elevation mountains of Colorado to the dramatic hill and mountain formations of Utah reminiscent of every Wile E Coyote & Roadrunner cartoon.
Tomorrow we head through the rest of Utah, stopping for lunch as we re-visit with one of my cousins.
