Days 65 - 67
Chapin, South Carolina to Savannah, Georgia
We thanked Mark and Loni for being our gracious hosts (despite the calamity caused by Hurricane Helene) and headed south. It was wonderful to catch up with them again, as they have been our very best friends for several decades. We're headed to Savannah to further experience the old south. We knew we were getting there as we pulled into our campground and saw the alligator warning signs!
To see the city we booked a tour on one of the many tour trolley companies.
After the tour we had lunch at The Lady and Sons restaurant, which is owned by Paula Dean. They serve their food family-style, of which there was plenty!
The next day we headed over to Hilton Head, which is a coastal island known for its many golf course resorts. With so many resorts and condominiums, it was rare to catch a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean. But there are public beaches and we were able to enjoy the afternoon at Coligny Beach and have some Nachos and beverages at the Tiki Hut at the Blue Chair Bay Resort.
The buildings showcased ornate wrought iron.
As the driver/tour guide showed us around, he pointed out the locations where famous movies had been filmed. These included Forrest Gump's park bench location and the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil house (the Mercer Williams House Museum.}
The Old Pirate's House, as made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson
The drink coaster informed us that we just missed the Tattoo Festival. Darn!
The beach day was fun. As you can see, it was windy and overcast. We've been hearing that another hurricane (named Milton) is forming off of Cuba and is expected to hit Florida during the time we will be in Orlando - our next stop.
