Days 46-48
Stowe, Vermont to Foxboro, Massachusetts
We wanted to stay somewhere in the Boston suburbs. There are not a lot of campgrounds within the city limits of big cities, and they only start to appear as you head further away. We found a highly-rated campground in the town of Foxboro and we stayed there for three nights. This gave us two full days (Sunday and Monday) to explore eastern Massachusetts. We considered checking out downtown Boston, perhaps even taking one of the Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Buses. But we decided to relax on Sunday instead and watch the 49ers play (and lose, ugh!) We also watched Maxx play hockey on LiveBarn (his team didn't fare any better than the 49ers.) The stadium for the New England Patriots was located about two miles up the road from our campsite. It turns out that the Patriots had a home game this Sunday and all the roads around our campground became completely clogged with gridlock the whole day. We even were deafened as the military jets flew just overhead as the National Anthem was being sung!
That evening we decided to head over to Susan's old neighborhood in nearby Natick, Massachustees. We drove past her old house and Susan was pleased to see that her old house was well maintained and that her neighborhood was thriving.
The Patriots game had been over for a couple of hours, and the gridlock had started to improve. We drove past Susan's old childhood home, and then headed over to a restaurant that her family has fond memories of patronizing. It is Ken's Steakhouse. Maybe you've seen their salad dressing on your grocery store shelves? Susan enjoyed a steak dinner while I had the Chicken Parmigiana.
Wouldn't it be nice if they still charged these prices today?
With our remaining day in the area we decided to check out Cape Cod. Susan had vacationed there in her youth, while I had never been there. We checked out Hyannis, which has a nice harbor.
We also hopped on our E-Bikes and rode along the Cape Cod Rail Trail.
We stopped for lunch at one of the many quaint seafood diners that offered the local favorites - Lobster Roll (for John) and Clam Roll (for Susan.) While we were waiting for our food to be served, John tired to recall that famous Limerick - "I once knew a girl from Nantucket..." John was never able to complete the poem.
Tomorrow we travel only about 60 miles and see more of New England in the area of Newport, Rhode Island.
Hyannis also has a beautiful Memorial Park dedicated to JFK.
