Days 17 - 20

West Yellowstone to Garryowen, Montana and on to Custer, South Dakota

Garyowen Montana was just a one-night layover as we made our way to Custer. But it's also next to the Little Bighorn Battlefield (also known as Custer's Last Stand), which is a National Monument as well as a National Cemetery and is worth a visit. So we got to see where the 7th Calvery met a big defeat and General Custer met his demise.

A beautiful final resting place for these fallen heros.

As we crossed over from Montana into South Dakota (another state for the map!) we soon entered the Black Hills. This area is really beautiful! And the weather was really perfect for our visit, so we really lucked out. Things to see here include: Mt. Rushmore Memorial; Crazy Horse Memorial, Sturgis; Deadwood; and Devil's Tower. We enjoyed them all!

Crazy Horse Memorial

Sturgis

Deadwood

We've been seeing these fiberglass buffalo statues in various towns. They are all from the same mold but are then painted differently. Susan snapped some pictures of a couple:

Mt. Rushmore Memorial

Oh yeah, today's my birthday. Susan bought me a slice of pie. Thanks Susan!

Tomorrow we make our way to the east side of South Dakota.

We took the walking trail that took us to the famous "back side" of the Mt. Rushmore monument!
